College dean to leave after only seven months on the job
Mary Ella Feinleib is resigning from her position as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences effective March 22, after only seven months at her job. Her resignation came as a surprise to many faculty members. A search committee is being formed to find a replacement. Until then, Professor of Classics James Helm will serve as acting dean.
Police apprehend arboretum flasher College Security nabbed the man suspected to be the flasher who has exposed himself in the Arb over a dozen times since last June. A student who has been flashed three times played a key role in catching him.
Letter writing and rally planned by new group
Oberlin students are fighting anti-lesbian, gay and bisexual legislation in Utah. Students have been e-mailing and writing politicians in that state in regards to a Salt Lake City school board effort to block the formation of an organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual student group in a high school.
Ture lectures on Pan-Africanism, Zionism
Kwame Ture, a leading Pan-Africanist activist, will speak at Oberlin Monday. Ture is coauthor of the 1967 manifesto Black Power and a founder of the All-African People's Revolutionary Party. The last time Ture came to Oberlin, in 1989, he was met with protest against his anti-Zionist views.
CFC and EXWR Dept. to search for replacement
Wendy Hesford, a visiting assistant professor of expository writing and English has resigned from her position in the college. She has been offered a job at Indiana University. Last week, the expository writing program was denied a third tenure-track position.
Upski named visionary
Billy Wimsatt, who recently dropped out of Oberlin, was named one of 20 visionaries in the March issue of The Utne Reader, a magazine that excerpts highlights from alternative media sources. Wimsatt recently published a book, Bomb the Suburbs.
Student Senate postpones charter resubmissions
The Student Senate discussed academic issues including the credit hour system, academic advising and teacher certification programs. The body also approved a measure that gives student organizations more time to resubmit their charters. Previously, every charter had to be resubmitted.
