Heritage Center Honors Alum

To the Editors:

The Oberlin Heritage Center invites the community to a reception to celebrate the 2008 “Oberlinian of the Year,” Bert Latran, Jr. It will be held at the Parish Hall of Christ Episcopal Church (162 South Main Street in Oberlin) on Sunday, March 2nd from 2 to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

A graduate of Oberlin High School and Oberlin College, Latran was nominated by Pat Murphy, the executive director of the Oberlin Heritage Center, an organization to which Latran has devoted over ten years of active service. In 2005 the Heritage Center recognized him with the Keep Oberlin Beautiful Award for his dedication to maintaining and improving the Heritage Center grounds and surrounding community. For several years Latran has taken a leadership role in Oberlin Pride Day, a city wide clean-up project. In addition to his outdoor pursuits, Latran also serves the Oberlin Heritage Center as a member of the Board of Trustees and several committees.

Outside of his service at the Heritage Center, Latran can be found cheerfully improving the community in small ways and encouraging and recruiting whomever he meets to join him. He is a local businessman and an active volunteer all around town. Bert is known as someone upon whom all ages in the community can rely — he provides a strong shoulder for older folks to lean on, and serves as a good role model for youngsters to look up to. Latran was instrumental in establishing the Boys and Girls Club of Lorain County and served on its Board for several years. He also works to promote the Ohio Scottish Games and is involved in Pittsfield Township, where he lives.

“His hard work, boundless enthusiasm, and genuine concern for others all year round inspire us all to take pride in our community,” said Murphy.

All are invited to stop by Christ Episcopal Church’s Parish Hall anytime between 2 and 4 p.m. and commend Latran for his many years of passionate service and dedication to the community. Parking is available in the Morgan Street lot as well as on Morgan Street. Disabled accessible parking is available off of South Main Street behind Christ Church. For more information or to volunteer to help with this or other events, please call the Oberlin Heritage Center at (440) 774-1700 or send an e-mail to members@oberlinheritage.org.
