Yeowomen 1-4 After Allegheny, OWU Losses

Scramble!: First-year midfielder Emma Edmondson fights for a loose ball in the Yeowomen’s 10-17 home loss.

The ladies of Oberlin College lacrosse have hit a rough spot in their season, dropping two straight conference games. With consecutive losses at Allegheny and Ohio Wesleyan University, the Yeowomen are looking to refocus and finish the season strong.

Last week in Meadville, Pennsylvania, Oberlin came out confident against Allegheny, but the host Gators killed the Yeowomen’s spirit with a 0-9 run in the opening of the game.

Sophomore Lela Hull put up four goals and five face off victories in attempts to pull the ladies close to victory. Hull’s performance, along with those of first-year Scarlett Prati and sophomore Dana Rich, gave the Yeowomen a fighting chance throughout the match.

“We just need to focus on the team we are and keep things positive,” junior Kaitlin Barrer stated, as the Yeowomen prepared to face an uphill battle against Ohio Wesleyan three days later. The Bishops of OWU were not going to be an easy opponent and Oberlin needed to play flawlessly if it wanted to walk away victorious.

After arriving in their opponent’s domain, the Yeowomen stumbled out of the starting gate as they gave up nine straight goals to open the first half. However, Hull refused to go down without a fight, and put in the first four goals for Oberlin. This did not do much to the OWU offensive blitzkrieg, and the half ended with the ladies trailing 5-13.

The second half was much of the same. Barrer backed up Hull’s team-leading four-goal game with a three-goal performance that only scratched the surface of the OWU lead. As the offense struggled to catch up with the Bishops, the defense was raided with an attack like none it had ever seen before.

Junior goalie Kira Thorien was able to stop ten shots and grab four ground balls, but it was an effort that fell short. First-year Emma Edmondson noted that the very talented Ohio Wesleyan team “had an army of players,” emphasizing its large squad. In the end, the ladies could not hold up and dropped their second straight game with a final score of 9-24.

Although the Yeowomen have hit a rough spot, they remain optimistic about the rest of the season and look forward to improving their skills. With three games left in the season, the team feels it has a lot it can prove and remains anxious for the opportunity to show off what it can achieve.

This Saturday, the ladies face the University of Redlands, followed by a very exciting alumni game. All the action begins at 2 p.m.
