Oberlin tennis continues to struggle after losing their recent matches. The men’s team played four matches in total, three coming from the Great Lakes Colleges Association tournament this past weekend on April 13.

The men first played Calvin College and Wabash on that Friday, losing 0-6 and 2-5. The following Saturday, they went on to play number 13 ranked Kalamazoo, losing 0-7.

On April 16, the men played a doubleheader with the women’s team against Denison in the Heisman Field House. After getting swept in doubles, the match was nearly decided early until junior Chris Pray came back in his match at the one after, losing his first set 2-6. Though he ended up winning the following sets 6-3, 7-6 (3), the match ended in a loss, leaving three matches unfinished and a final score of 1-5.

The women have only had two matches since their loss against Hope. They received a confidence boost after downing Allegheny 9-0 on April 14, however.

In doubles, senior Bianca Barr and sophomore Elle Anzinger set the standard as the number one pair, with an 8-1. Following in their lead, junior Jackie Golden and sophomore Kelly Sipp won the battle at number two, 8-4. The Hayden sisters, sophomores Olivia and Jane, took the third match of the segment for the sweep, 8-0.

Singles winners were Barr (7-5, 6-1), Golden (6-1, 3-6, 10-3), Anzinger (6-2, 6-1), Olivia Hayden (6-1, 6-4), Sipp (6-0, 6-2) and sophomore Lara Nagle (6-0, 6-1).

The women went on to play Denison with the men on April 16 only to have their momentum stopped abruptly. Just like the men, they were swept in doubles, turning the contest into a play-til-decision match. Two losses in singles ended the match and left the remaining four unfinished. Final score: 0-5.

Both teams look forward to this weekend as they play two doubleheaders against Earlham and Hiram College. The matches start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 in the Heisman Field House.
