Oberlin Tennis Teams Drop Nonconference Games

Oberlin tennis has fallen on tough times since their spring break matches, with two sets of losses for both the men and women this past weekend.

The women made a trip to Kalamazoo, MI, for a non-conference tournament on April 6.

With Kalamazoo College as their first opponents, the competition got off to a rough start with the Kalamazoo ladies sweeping the Yeowomen in doubles. The closest match of the three was given by senior Bianca Barr and sophomore Elle Anzinger. Paired as the number one, the two gave a hard fight throughout the match, drawing it into a tie-breaker where they lost 8-9 (4-7).

The singles competition was a little trickier, as four of the six matches ended with no result. The only two recorded matches were the one and three played by Barr and junior Jackie Golden. Barr lost 2-6, 3-6 while Golden fell 3-6, 0-6, leaving the final score 0-5.

The women went on to play Hope College the following day. This time, none of the doubles matches ended with a result, making them all void and leaving the match down to the singles.

Barr started off the competition as the number one, winning her first set 6-4 but losing the next two 1-6, 2-6. Anzinger came in as the two seed but lost 3-6, 2-6. Golden had a promising start as the three by winning her first set 6-3. She lost her momentum in the second set and could not find it again in the third, losing the match 1-6, 3-6.

Sophomore Olivia Hayden came in at the four and lost her first set 3-6. She made a strong comeback in the second set to win 6-2, followed by an even better third set where she won 6-1 to give Oberlin its first win. Sophomores Kelly Sipp and Jane Hayden played the fifth and sixth seeded singles. Sipp and Hayden lost in straight sets with Sipp losing both by a score of 3-6 and Hayden 3-6, 2-6. Final score: 1-5, Oberlin’s loss.

The men faced similar results in their matches on the same weekend, starting with Allegheny on April 6. Doubles were tough, as the matches at the one and two were very close. Juniors Chris Pray and Colin Burling played as the one, drawing it in close but missing a few key shots for a loss of 6-8. Sophomore David Midler and junior Ezra Goldman had a tight match as well but lost 7-9. The only points gained from doubles came from senior Arthur Zeyda and junior Tom Page who won a dominating victory of 8-1.

Singles brought some hope to the men, with Pray winning straight sets at the one spot, 6-3. Midler was not as successful in the two, however, losing 3-6, 0-6. Zeyda followed Midler as the three, losing his first set 2-6 only to come back in the second to win 6-4. Although he fought hard, Zeyda was unable to do a repeat in the third, losing 3-6.

Goldman, after losing the first set 0-6, tried to come back in the second but lost 4-6 playing as the four. The last two matches ended on a good note for the men as Burling had a strong win at the five in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Page lost his first set 2-6 but came back to win his second and third sets 6-4, 6-2. Final score: 4-5 Oberlin’s loss.

The men had to shake off the loss as they played Case Western Reserve the following day. They had trouble adjusting to Case’s courts, which had so many different lines painted that it was difficult to determine what was in and what was out. This proved detrimental for the Yeomen. Doubles ended in a clean sweep against the Yeomen, with Burling and Pray losing 4-8, followed by Midler and Goldman who lost 5-8. Page and Zeyda’s match ended in a score of 2-8.

Singles showed a trend in the first few matches — the guys were getting a feel for the courts during the first set and trying the comeback in the second. Pray started out the competition as the one, losing the first set 2-6. Nevertheless, he brought the match closer in the second set, making some key shots and counters that almost got him the win, but he just barely fell short for the loss of 6-7.

Midler came in at the two but lost 1-6, 4-6. Zeyda played a fairly even match at the three, but a few key shots cost him straight sets of 4-6. Burling came in as the four and played a match similar to Pray’s, losing the first set only to come in close for the second. Although he fought the good fight, Burling lost 1-6, 6-7. The last two matches were played by Page and first-year Jordan Maseng, with Page losing 1-6, 2-6, and Maseng losing 2-6, 1-6. Final Score: 0-9 Oberlin’s loss.

Though these losses were hard for both teams, they’re more then ready for their upcoming matches this weekend as the men take on Calvin today in Albion, MI, and the women lock horns tomorrow with Allegheny College.
