Indoor Track Briefs

Although the women’s distance medley relay team has grabbed recent headlines, the Oberlin indoor track and field teams have also recently performed well. Both teams had members qualify for the All-Ohio Championships tomorrow at Otterbein College, with short, middle and long distance runners represented.

The men’s team is represented by sophomore Ryan King in the mile and senior John Shaw in the 5000-meter run. The women have all four DMR runners participating, with first-year Amelia Fortunato and sophomore Ali Gemma in the 55-meter dash and first-year Clara Shaw in the 400-meter race.

The men’s DMR team had reasons to be proud as well this break, as they set a new record with a time of 10:47 in their fourth place finish at the NCAC relays at Denison on Jan. 27. The team was composed of Shaw, King, and juniors Cody Hartley and Andrew Pike. Junior Kate Cook finished third in women’s shotput while senior John Hepp placed fifth in the men’s shotput. The Yeowomen finished third overall at the meet and the men finished eighth.

Sophomore phenom Maddy Davis-Hayes broke her own indoor record at the Case Western Reserve University Invitational on Feb. 2 with a first place finish at a time of 5:12. King had another strong meet, winning the mile and 800-meter run. The women finished sixth and the men finished eighth overall.

Oberlin will host its second open home indoor track meet tonight at 6 p.m.
