Women’s Soccer Loses Heartbreaker in Last Minute

The Oberlin College women’s soccer team played their first official North Coast Athletic Conference game of the season this past Tuesday. Unfortunately, the Yeowomen were unable to block shots off corner kicks and suffered a last minute loss at the hands of the Hiram College Terriers.

The two teams played an intense game that appeared to be headed into overtime. The score was 2-2 in the last minute of the game. With under a minute left, Hiram received a corner kick and managed to score their third goal of the game. The final score was 2-3.

Both teams played an even match with 16 shots on net from Oberlin compared to Hiram’s 14. The loss brings Oberlin’s season record to 4-6-1 and 0-1 in the NCAC. This was also Hiram’s first NCAC match, so their record is 0-1 in the NCAC and 2-7 overall.

The Terriers consistently stuck to their game of converting corner kicks into goals throughout the game. In fact, Hiram scored all three of their goals off six corner kicks. Hiram’s tactic kept the Yeowomen on their toes and at a slight disadvantage though they played tough throughout the match. First-year Sarah Grabinski played with great intensity in goal; she had three saves over the course of the game.

The Yeowomen scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute of the first half. First-year Kate Berry-Millet scored the goal off of a high right punt from the outside. The Terriers responded to this breakthrough with a drive of their own two minutes later. This drive ended in a corner kick that first-year Hali Stamets converted into a goal for Hiram. Which later pulled ahead at the end of the first half when senior Lauren Manfrass scored in the 33rd minute.

The Yeowomen stepped up the intensity in the second half. With a handball inside the box in the 61st minute, the Terriers offered the perfect opportunity for Oberlin to even the score. Senior Sam Schongalla took the shot and scored a goal with a hard, direct punt into the net. Despite a nail biting game of back and forth passing throughout the remainder of the game, the Yeowomen could not quite hold the Terriers at bay.

The Yeowomen will look to improve their record when they play Earlham College. Oberlin will take the field at home at noon on Oct. 7.
