Rugby Rookies Shine in Kenyon Thrashing

Despite the drizzle and chilly temperatures, the Oberlin women’s rugby team stepped up their intensity and finished their third game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 23 against Kenyon with a thrilling score of 19-0.

The Rhino Ruggers had the home field advantage and came out with such force that one Kenyon player openly admitted, “You guys killed us,” as they left the field in awe.

The game was mostly spent in Kenyon’s 22-meter line, near their try zone. Senior Susie Sun surprised herself and her teammates with a phenomenal rookie performance, including an intense breakaway that resulted in a try.

This year’s Rhino rookies have surprisingly raw talent and have demonstrated tremendous ferocity in the first three games of the season despite being new to the game.

Meanwhile veteran Rhino Ruggers have been leading the team in goals. Senior Morgan Evans scored after a 50-yard breakaway and junior Leigh Wilson scored on her third charge into the try zone after the ball was held up twice by Kenyon.

Senior Anna Beeke made two conversion kicks as Oberlin’s marching band played a tribute song to the rugby team.

Fans crowded the sidelines with umbrellas to cheer on the dominating force that Oberlin has become this semester. With enough players to field three full rugby teams and 24 rookies, the team is looking to better their second place finish in division three rugby in Ohio.

The Oberlin Rhinos will play this weekend at Ashland University, a short 30-minute drive from the Oberlin campus.
