In the Locker Room: RV Carroll

The Oberlin College football team may know him as RV, “The Little Engine That Could.” Other students may have noticed his new mohawk — which doesn’t even compare to last year’s haircut, when RV decided to shave his head and eyebrows as a fashion statement. Most students know him from football games in which he can be spotted running over defense on the football field and scoring touchdowns. The 5’10”, 190 pound running back from Perry, Ohio ran for 691 yards and eight touchdowns as a first-year, and is putting up impressive numbers for the Yeomen this season. Don’t let sophomore RV Carroll’s size and big smile fool you; this kid is tough as nails.

Cassius Harris: So, RV, how did you get the nickname “The Little Engine That Could?”
RV Carroll: I don’t really know. I’ll guess it was based on my running style. No matter how big the opponent is, I try to run over them.

CH: Sounds good. What other nicknames do you have? What do people back in Perry call you?
RVC: Back in my hometown, people call me Rev, or just V.

CH: Do you mean like a priest?
RVC: (smiling) Yeah, I guess so…

CH: What was the deal last year with the shaving of the head and eyebrows?
RVC: Well, my roommate from last year wanted me to shave my head, so I did. Then I went to dinner and a girl dared me to shave my eyebrows, so she basically called me out in front of a lot of people. I didn’t want to back down, so I did it. She shaved them herself with shaving cream.

CH: Wow! So what’s it like being hit by guys who are bigger than you?
RVC: It’s not fun getting hit by 6’2”, 240 pound guys, but somebody’s got to do it.

CH: Do you feel that you have grown as a running back this year?
RVC: Last year I was a rookie, and this year I feel that I have definitely grown. I have more awareness on the field, the game has slowed down, not everyone is moving as fast, and it makes it easier for me.

CH: Is it easier for you to find holes?
RVC: Yes, a lot easier, also easier to find gaps, the linemen do a great job of opening things up for me.

CH: What expectations do you have as the conference is starting?
RVC: I feel like we’re going to win and if we play with confidence, we should be able to beat all the teams in our conference.

CH: I sure hope so. RV, one last question, which NFL running back do you compare yourself to?
RVC: I would have to say Ladainian Tomlinson because he’s not the biggest back in the NFL. He catches the ball well out of the back field, and stays in block well. He’s a complete back, and that’s the type of back I want to be.
