Down a Player, Field Hockey Still Prevails

The Oberlin women’s field hockey team finished their game triumphant Wednesday in a 2-1 victory over Kenyon College.

Due to injuries and a lack of subs, Oberlin was forced to play 10 players on the field against Kenyon’s 11 field players. The team stepped it up and took the Oberlin mantra “fearless” to heart.

The scoring began by Oberlin in the first half with a goal by first-year Catherine Meredith on a cross from junior Ashley Allen.

Junior Christine Politis had an impressive game with a beautiful goal off a corner in the second half. Overall, the team really amped up their play and demonstrated that their champion spirit is still resonating in the air.

“I thought our energy was excellent and that we were kinetic. No it was true, we were so determined. We came out today wanting to win and we did,” commented senior captain Claire Cheney. “We were dynamic!”

Last Saturday the team was unable to connect on the field, which resulted in a 3-5 loss to Denison.

After Denison pulled ahead for an early 3-0 lead, the Yeowomen found themselves scrambling to keep it together, playing catch-up for the majority of the game.

The team managed to get on the board in the first half when sophomore Abigail Brox found first-year Catherine Meredith in front of the goal. However, the team headed to the locker room at halftime down 5-1 — an unfamiliar feeling for a team that has dominated their conference for the past few years.

“It was a nightmare. Denison scored right away, which started us out on a mental crumble,” commented junior goalie Lauren Malinowski.

The Yeowomen were able to turn their game around in the second half, tripling the amount of shots they took in the first half. They added two more goals: Meredith put another away and junior Ashley Allen came through for another point. The team clamped down on the Denison offense, allowing only four shots and exhibiting the defensive tenacity and organization that is characteristic of this team. A gritty effort by sophomore Holly Sloofman pulled the plug on an offensive sequence that would have given Denison an open shot.

Oberlin will travel to Wittenberg University on Sept. 23 for a 6 p.m. game looking to improve their 2-1 standing in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
