Volleyball Goes .500 in Ohio Wesleyan Tournament

The Oberlin volleyball team left the Ohio Wesleyan weekend tournament with a little swagger in their step after going 2-2 against a handful of local Ohio teams. Coming off a long preseason, the Yeowomen were finally able to showcase their talent in the two-day tournament. They defeated Bethany College in an intense, five game match, and then thrashed Lake Erie College three games to none, while dropping both matches to Bluffton and Wilmington 3-0.

After narrowly defeating Bethany in a three-hour match, winning the tiebreaker 15-12, they unfortunately had to return to the court five minutes later to face their next opponents, Bluffton. Oberlin fought hard but could never muster a big enough rally after dropping the first game. They lost 30-11, 30-14 and 30-21 against the Beavers.

The squad, led by seniors Meaghan Pugh and Rose Garrett and the 2005 team assist leader, junior Deysi Villarreal, returned to Delaware, Ohio on Saturday to face two additional opponents. After losing to Wilmington in three straight sets, the Yeowomen regrouped and came out sharp for the second match against Lake Erie. Oberlin was on top of their game as they recorded 37 kills and nine aces on their way to a 3-0 victory.

Oberlin has their next match at home on Sept. 12 against Wooster, the first conference match of the season.
