Oberlin field hockey, who competed in the NCAA tournament for the first time in college history last year, continued their winning ways on September 1, defeating Sewanee University 3-1. The team could not duplicate a similar result on Saturday however, losing to Centre College 2-1 in a tight game.

The Yeowomen, who made it to the second round of the nationwide tournament last season, are fewer in numbers this season due to injuries. During the weekend the Yeowomen had no subs. But whereas some teams would play conservatively with so few players, Oberlin took this situation in stride and fought bravely through their first weekend of competition.

Sophomore Abigail ‘Prunie’ Brox, last year’s leading scorer in the North Coast Athletic Conference last season, notched all three goals for Oberlin against Sewanee. Brox notched two in the first half and one in the second. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski recorded 20 saves, keeping Sewanee’s attack at bay. Sophomore defender Holly Sloofman also had a key defensive save to prevent a goal.

Oberlin came out strong in the game against Centre, going into halftime with a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from first-year Catherine Meredith, assisted by junior Ashley Allen. However, Midway through the second half, Centre scored two goals in a five-minute time span, making it an intense finish. Both teams had a similar number of opportunities to score, with Centre outshooting Oberlin 16-13. Junior Christine Politis led the team with five shots, while Malinowski had 14 saves.

The field hockey team plays next on Sept. 9 at home against Transylvania College.
