Men’s Tennis Places Fifth at NCACs
The Oberlin men’s tennis team finished their season strong this year at the NCAC tournament at Kenyon last weekend. They lost their first match 2-4 against Wooster on Saturday, April 29. In doubles, sophomore Chris Pray and junior Jimmy Rosenheim were paired at the one and won 8-4. The twos were sophomore Colin Burling and senior David Cotter who played a hard match, which they lost 1-8. The last match of doubles was a close one with juniors Arthur Zeyda and Bryce Fotiu-Wojtowicz playing the three. In the end, they suffered a tight loss of 6-8. The singles competition started off with Pray at the one, winning a tight first set 7-6 and his second 6-4. Rosenheim took the two spot and had a slow start, losing the first set 4-6. He came around in the second, though, keeping the set close and winning it 7-6. With this new momentum, Rosenheim completely crushed his opponent in the third with a shut out victory of 6-0. Cotter had a hard match in the three, where he lost both sets 4-6 and 0-6. First-year David Midler was at the four but was unable to finish due to injury, nullifying the match. Zeyda started off the five spot roughly as he lost the first set 3-6. Though Zeyda got a little momentum going in the second, winning 7-5, he was unable to keep it up in the third and lost 2-6. Sophomore Ezra Goldman had the six spot and lost both sets 4-6 and 0-6. The Yeomen’s next match was the first of two the following day on April 30. This time they played Wabash. The team had a rough start to the match as they got swept in the doubles competition. The singles competition went a little bit smoother for the Yeomen with Rosenheim winning both sets 6-4 and 6-3 in the two, while Pray’s match at the one was not finished. Cotter gained another point for the Yeomen at the three, winning straight sets 6-1 and 6-3. Midler followed in the four with a dominating match, winning straight sets 6-1 and 6-0. Zeyda kept the streak going in the five, winning straight sets as well, 6-4 and 6-2. Goldman was the number six again but was unable to keep up with his opponent, losing both sets 0-6 and 3-6. The Yeomen won the match 4-2. Later that day, the Yeomen went on to face Wittenberg, their final match of the season. The match started strong for the Yeomen as they quickly swept the doubles. The ones, Pray and Rosenheim, won their match 8-4 followed by Burling and Cotter and Zeyda and Fotiu-Wojtowicz playing the twos and threes, respectively. The twos won 8-7 while the threes won 8-3. The singles opened up with Pray at the one. Though he had a close first set where he won 7-5, his second set went much easier, and he won 6-2. Rosenheim was at the two with a rather unpredictable match. After winning the first set rather easily 6-1, he lost the second set 1-6. Fortunately, Rosenheim came through in the third set for the win of 6-4. Cotter had a difficult match in the three and ended up losing 2-6 and 4-6. The final match ended up being Midler’s as he played the four, achieving a total blow out, winning 6-0 in both sets. Zeyda and Goldman’s matches in the five and six went unfinished with a final score of 4-1. The Yeomen placed fifth in the NCAC and ended their season with a 14-9
