Women’s Tennis Shuts Out Earlham at Championships

The Yeowomen played their final two matches this past weekend at the NCAC tournament. On Friday, April 28, the Yeowomen played against Wittenberg.

In doubles, the Yeowomen didn’t fare too well as they lost two out of their three matches; their only win went to sophomore Kimiko Glynn and junior Bianca Barr playing the one. They won 8-4 while twos, first-years Elle Anzinger and Kelly Sipp, and threes sophomore Jackie Golden and first-year Olivia Hayden lost tight matches 6-8 and 8-9, respectively.

In singles, Glynn started off the competition strong, dominating the one spot and winning both sets 6-1. Barr followed in a difficult match at the two. Barr won the first set 6-3, then slowed down in the second and lost it 4-6. She started getting it back in the third but couldn’t catch up and was defeated by a final score of 6-7.

Golden played the three and had a hard time with her opponent, losing both sets 2-6 and 3-6. Senior Katie Lurain had a tough match as well in the four. Though she completely shut out her opponent 6-0 in the first set, her opponent gained momentum and the match began to go downhill. Lurain lost the second and third sets 1-6. The women finished strong, however, as Anzinger and Hayden won the five and six spots. The final score was 4-5.

Later that day, the Yeowomen played Earlham and got quite the morale boost, shutting out Earlham 5-0. Still sore from the tight loss against Wittenberg, the women took out their frustrations on Earlham, dominating to an almost vicious degree.

In doubles, Barr and Glynn gained a shut-out victory of 8-0 at the one, followed by Anzinger and Sipp’s victory of 8-2 and Golden and Lurain’s shut-out victory of 8-0. Singles was slightly tamer only because there were just two matches, taken by Glynn and Hayden at the one and five. Earlham was disheartened after both won 6-0, apparently tired of the abuse, leaving the final score 5-0.

The last match of the Yeowomen’s season was a good one as they played Allegheny. The women had a rough opening in doubles, Barr and Glynn losing the one 4-8 and Anzinger and Sipp with a tight loss of 7-9 in the two. Golden and Lurain gained a point for OC as they quickly won their match 8-3.

Singles had a better start as Glynn opened up with a straight win of 6-1 and 6-0. Barr had a hard match at the two, losing 2-6 and 3-6. Golden had a close win in the three after coming back from a loss in the first set of 4-6. She came back strong in the second and won 7-5, following up with a dominant win of 6-2 in the third.

The four spot was cancelled, but Anzinger played the five and had a solid victory. Anzinger won the first set 6-3 and earned a shut out in the second 6-0. Finally, Hayden played the six and finished the match strong, winning 6-3 and 6-0. The final score was 5-3, which left the Yeowomen with a solid final season record of 10-10.

Although the Yeowomen had a successful season, they still feel like they have a lot of improving to do.

“Next year we should be able to improve and put together a really good record,” said Sipp.

The Yeowomen had many newcomers and still managed to gel, especially toward the season’s end.

“We had a lot of incoming freshmen and as the season went along we became closer and more supportive...No matter what it’s really not about individual victories. It’s about the team,” said Sipp. The Yeowomen were competitive this season and only look to be getting better with time, making the 2006-2007 season one to look forward to.
