Women’s Lacrosse Wins Last NCAC Game of Season

Stay Where You Are: First-year attacker Lela Hull takes a break from scoring goals to contribute defensive pressure in a recent game vs. Allegheny.

The lacrosse team went into its final game of the season with heads held high and aspirations even higher. Going to Wittenberg last Saturday, the Yeowomen knew there was only one thing they could do to their ravenous opponents: destroy them. Behind the leadership of seniors Meg Reitz and Beth Sebian, the team played with everything they had, defeating the Tigers 17-15 in their first conference win of the season.

Everyone’s favorite lacrosse superhero, first-year Lela Hull, had six goals and two assists to top a season full of amazing performances. She finished the season with an impressive 42 goals in 12 games. “Lela is a ball of fire who ignited this season and blew up all over our competition. She’s so hot right now!” commented Reitz on her teammate’s play for the year.

Hull promises to be quite the foundation for the program, which has improved much over the past year. Having doubled the team’s win total from last year while causing a ruckus in the conference, the program is looking to return to its conference dominance of almost a decade ago.

The Yeowomen had a balanced offense with Reitz scoring three goals, sophomore Kaitlin Barrer netting three goals and first-year Dana Rich earning two goals. Sebian, sophomore Elizabeth Gula and sophomore Rose Reid each added a goal a piece. Sophomore Kira Thorien also had an assist. Oberlin out-shot the Tigers in both halves, tallying a total of 48 shots on goal to the opposition’s 35. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Allen finished with nine saves, while Oberlin forced Wittenberg to make 15.

The seniors go out with a bang and leave behind a legacy that is sure to get better as the program improves. Seniors Sebian, Reitz, and Megan Schott will all be missed, but their hard work and commitment to success will not be forgotten.

Hull reflected on her time spent with the graduating players, emphasizing how much she has learned from them. “All of them have been great teammates, leaders, sources of inspiration and most importantly great friends.”

The Yeowomen finished the season 4-10 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC. Throughout the season, Oberlin flexed its offensive muscles and were very close to winning a few more games. With only three seniors leaving, the return of the majority of the team creates a positive outlook for next year.
