Men’s Tennis Team Slides Past Earlham

The Oberlin men’s tennis team edged past the Earlham Quakers 4-3 in a close match on Saturday, April 22. Playing in Granville, Ohio, the Yeomen team split the singles competition 3-3 and won the doubles matches 2-1 overall.

In the doubles competition, senior David Cotter and sophomore Colin Burling played the ones, losing a difficult match 4-8. The twos, sophomores Ezra Goldman and Chris Pray, won their match 8-5 while juniors Arthur Zeyda and Bryce Fotiu-Wojtowicz won 8-6 at the three.

The singles competition proved a more difficult task. Sophomore Chris Pray’s skillful play at the one position helped give Oberlin a good start, as he won both his matches, 6-2 and 6-1. Despite starting out well, Oberlin could not contain Earlham, who started creeping up on them, winning three matches in a row.

Junior Jimmy Rosenheim played a rough match at the two. Though he put up a good fight, he was unable to match his opponent, losing both sets 2-6. Next came Cotter at the three spot, who had an equally hard time with his opponent, losing both sets 2-6 and 1-6.

The four spot went to Zeyda, who had a slow start, losing his first set 3-6. Zeyda came back in the second set for a tight win in a tie-breaker where he won 7-6. The third set unfortunately didn’t go as well, with Zeyda losing 1-6 in the end.

Despite losing three straight matches, Oberlin responded well with Goldman, who played a good match at the five, winning his first set 6-1. The second set ended in a loss of 5-7, but he finished strong with a 6-2 win in the third set. Finally, Fotiu-Wojtowicz ended the match well with a solid victory in the six spot, winning 6-2 and 6-3. With Oberlin winning 4-3 overall, it moved their record to 12-8 overall, 4-3 in conference.

Rosenheim was still caught off guard by Earlham’s early comeback in the singles matches, as he commented on his match.

“This was just one of those matches where we thought we had them and they snuck in from behind. We’ve had a few like that, but we know we can and will do better,” said Rosenheim.

The tough win was good preparation for the upcoming conference tournament. The men head off for the NCAC championships this Saturday, April 29, to play the final matches of the season.
