Yeowomen Go 1-1 Heading into League Championships

Here it Comes: Kimiko Glynn prepares to serve during a singles match against Kenyon.

The Yeowomen faced off against Earlham this past Saturday, April 22. The women made quick work of the team in doubles competition without losing a single match. Sophomore Kimiko Glynn and junior Bianca Barr were paired at the one, winning almost effortlessly 8-1.

First-years Elle Anzinger and Kelly Sipp followed in the two with a shutout victory of 8-0. The three spot went to sophomore Jackie Golden and senior Kate Lurain, winning 8-4. The singles competition was just as one-sided as OC continued to dominate. At the one, Glynn completely blew out her opponent, winning both sets 6-0.

The two, played by Barr, was a bit more even as she won the first set 6-1 but lost the second 2-6. The third set went into a tie-breaker, where Barr finished 10-7 for the win. Golden won both sets 6-2 in the three followed by Lurain in the four winning 6-2 and 6-1.

First-year Sarah Tietelbaum played a hard match at the five, losing the first set 4-6. She started coming around in the second set, however, drawing it into a tie-breaker. Tietelbaum was unable to gain the win, though, losing 6-8. First-year Olivia Hayden finished off the match in the six winning 6-1 and 6-0. Final score of the match was 8-1.

The ladies then played against Kenyon on Tuesday, April 25, where they found themselves in for a hard fight. In doubles, the only pair to gain a win were Glynn and Barr in the one with a score of 8-2. Twos, Anzinger and Sipp, and threes, Lurain and Hayden, both lost close matches 5-8. In singles, the ladies were placed in a string of hard matches.

Glynn played a very tough opponent in the one and lost both sets 3-6. Barr, after losing the first set 4-6, began to make a comeback in the second set and brought it into a tie-breaker. Barr was unable to grab the win, though, losing 4-6. Golden was next in the three and lost both her sets 3-6. Lurain, pulling out a win in her first set 6-3, lost her second set 3-6 after her opponent got a second wind. The third set was a harsh one for Lurain as she lost 0-6 in the four.

The last two matches turned into close ones for OC, as Sipp and Hayden played the five and six. Sipp, after losing the first set 0-6, made a comeback in the second set for a win of 7-5. The third set turned into a tie-breaker in which Sipp played as hard as she could. However, she was unable to overcome her opponent in the end, losing the set 7-10. Hayden played a similar match but was able to win her first set 4-6.

The second didn’t go as well, however, as Hayden lost 1-6, while also dropping the third set too. The final score was 1-8. Though they suffered a hard loss against Kenyon, the girls didn’t mind it as much as they did Kenyon’s attitude.

“Yeah, we had a hard loss,” states Lurain, “but it wouldn’t have been as bad if they weren’t such [bad sports].” The Yeowomen are off to the NCAC Championships later this week from April 27 to April 29 along with the men’s team, hoping to get a second chance against Kenyon.
