Men’s Lacrosse Remains Optimistic Despite Loss

The Yeomen were defeated 12-5 on Wednesday evening at Alexndre Stadium. Washington and Jefferson’s first-year attacker Zach Devilbiss scored an impressive five goals, and the Presidents’ sophomore goalkeeper Spooky Reid’s 17 saves hindered Oberlin attempts to score.

In the first half of play, Washington and Jefferson scored two minutes into the match with a goal by first-year attacker Sean Jasionowski. Junior Oberlin attackman Ian Dias tied the game at one apiece with an assist from first-year midfielder Jesse Kane.

The match got more interesting as the Presidents struck with three straight goals from sophomore midfielder Russ Kalkstein, Sean Jasionowski and Zach Devilbiss.

Oberlin quickly responded with a goal by Kane, ending the scoring streak with nine minutes remaining in the half. At the break, Washington and Jefferson led Oberlin 6-3.

Within the first eight minutes of the second half, Devilbiss scored back-to-back goals for the Presidents, giving his squad an 8-3 advantage. Senior attackman Will Jaffee and junior attackman Bryan Harfenist got the team’s blood flowing again with a couple of goals, bringing the Yeomen within three points.

First-year midfielder Kevin Hall and Devilbiss had a combined eight goals for the Presidents. Kalkstein and Jasionowski had two goals apiece to add to their squad’s success. Jaffee led the Yeomen in scoring with two goals, while senior goalkeeper Jared Pickard added 11 saves for Oberlin. Despite what appeared to be a bad day at the office, Pickard feels that the team is improving. “Overall, I thought the team played okay,” said Pickard. “It feels like we’re just a couple steps away from really clicking.”

Oberlin’s coach was excited by out-shooting the Presidents, but admits their defense needs to improve. “We played with them the whole game, we out-shot Washington and Jefferson,” said Coach Walz. “We are looking to put a complete effort on the field, in order to do that we have to shoot better and play better defense.

“We’re getting closer and closer to functioning very well as a team,” said Jaffee. “This is easily the most talented team I’ve played on since I’ve been here, so I have no doubt that wins will come.”

Oberlin held a 35-33 shot advantage but could not convert it into a victory. Oberlin’s record stands at 0-2 on the season. They will face rival Wittenberg University at 2 p.m. in Springfield, Ohio on Saturday, March 18.
