Men’s Tennis Stays Undefeated, Women’s Stumbles

The Yeowomen tennis squad faced a difficult match last Saturday when they played Kalamazoo. As they began their match on March 8, things didn’t look so good.

Kalamazoo took three matches in singles and won the doubles competition. Things were looking up in the first match of singles, though, as sophomore Kimiko Glynn came in with authority, winning her first set 6-0 and her second set 6-2.

However, from then on Kalamazoo really turned up the heat. As the number two singles player, junior Bianca Barr proved to be a tough one as she lost the first set 2-6 and just barely lost the second set 5-7.

Sophomore Jackie Golden played the third match and lost both sets 3-6. Senior Kate Lurain had the fourth match, losing both sets 2-6. The fifth match went to Olivia Hayden, losing both sets 3-6 and 2-6.

The sixth and final match went to first-year Sarah Tieltelbaum and ended in a loss, both sets ending with a score 2-6. The final score of the match was 1-8, leaving the women’s current record at 2-2. It is far too early in the season to judge performance, but at this point men’s tennis is stealing the show.

While the Yeowomen have had their ups and downs early on, men’s tennis has remained dominant. The Yeomen continued their undefeated winning streak against Ohio Wesleyan on March 4, for their seventh victory of the young season.

In doubles competition, Oberlin started off a little shaky. The Yeomen lost two of their three matches, giving the early edge to OWU. The final scores were 7-9, 8-2 and 3-8.

In singles, the first match featured sophomore Chris Pray who won both sets with scores of 6-1 and 7-5. The second match was played by senior Jimmy Rosenheim. After a tough first set where he lost 5-7, he came back in the second set to win 6-3. The tie-breaker, however, went to OWU with a final score of 6-1. Senior David Cotter was in the third match and beat out his opponent in both sets, winning 6-2 and 6-4.

In the fourth match, first-year David Middler dominated as he won both sets without yielding more then one game. Final scores for both sets were 6-1 for Middler. Junior Arthur Zeyda also gave a solid performance in the fifth match as he won both sets 6-3 and 6-1.

The final match featured sophomore Ezra Goldman, who completely blew out his opponent in the first set 6-0 and won his second set 6-1. The final score for the Yeomen was 5-2, which maintained their undefeated record at 7-0 on the season.
