Women’s soccer starts out strong

Getting rough: Junior Kym Buzdygon puts in the effort needed to gain control of the ball.

The Oberlin College Yeowomen soccer team opened their season in a match versus Heidelberg College on Sept. 3. The Yeowomen fell behind early in the match when Heidelberg jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 8:18 mark of the first half. First-year Joelle Sesar headed the Yeowomen comeback with a goal to tie the game with 50 seconds left in the first half.

The second half was all Yeowomen, as juniors Kim Buzdygon and Sam Schongalla scored a goal apiece to put the Yeowomen ahead 3-1, which ended up being the final score. Head Coach Andy Nelson described the season opener as “a great game for us.”

Oberlin’s second game of the season came on Sept. 4 against Defiance College. The Yeowomen came into the game hoping to keep up their winning ways. Sesar once again led the charge for the Yeowomen, hitting the first goal of the game with 3:07 in the first half. Defiance fought back and tied the game with one minute to play, sending it into overtime. Neither team was able to capitalize in overtime, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Yeowomen’s next match came on Sept. 7 against Capital University. Capital player Sam Klopfer scored the only goal as Capital went on to win the match 1-0.

“We played a solid match, we defended well, but we didn’t create enough opportunities,” Nelson said. The game marked the Yeowomen’s first loss of the young season, only managing four shotson goal.

Oberlin will travel to Mount St. Joseph for their next match this coming Sunday.
