Volleyball starts season 2-2

Teamwork: Sophomore Deysi Villarreal looks on as her teamate, first-year Isabella Gambuto, puts up a set.

The Yeowomen volleyball team came into this season with a positive attitude and started strong. On Sept. 7, OC volleyball collected its first two wins of the young season at the Oberlin Invitational, beating University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg 3-2, and then put a thrashing on Laroche College 3-0.

The Yeowomen lost game one of the match to University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg 27-30, but came back to win the next two games 30-19 and 30-28. UPG evened the score, but then Oberlin closed it out in game five with a 15-11 win. Oberlin handled Laroche in a much easier fashion, beating them 30-25, 30-14 and 30-21.

The Yeowomen went into the second day of the tournament undefeated, but lost their first match versus. Bethany College 3-2. The Yeowomen lost the first game 30-12, won the second 30-27, lost game three 30-22, won the fourth 31-29, but unfortunately lost the fifth 16-14.

The tired Yeowomen team then went on to face Ohio Wesleyan in the third place game, but was swept, losing 30-13, 30-21 and 30-28. The Yeowomen finished fourth overall in the tournament, and fourth-year Katie Au and second-year Deysi Villarreal were named to the All-Tournament team. Head coach Carey Cavanaugh said on the women’s performance, “Going 2-2 in our invitational is a great accomplishment for us.”

Oberlin had its first road match of the season this past Tuesday at Ursaline College, but despite their best efforts, lost the match 3-1. Ursaline took the first game 30-18. The Yeowomen fought back in the second, to win 30-22, but Ursaline proved too much in the third and fourth games, winning them 30-19 and 31-29, respectively.

Au once again stood out, collecting 19 digs in the match. Villarreal and first-year Caitlin Donnelly each helped the Yeowomen’s effort with a combined 38 assists, but unfortunately this proved too little.

Oberlin now stands at 2-3 on the season and heads to Baldwin-Wallace College for a tournament today.
