Football comes up short in close opener with Case

Hit Hard!: Sophomore quarterback Andy Stein watches as a Case Western Reserve player puts a hit on Oberlin senior wide receiver Andrew Crosby.

The Oberlin Yeomen football team opened their season this past Saturday against Case Western Reserve University. The Yeomen were looking to start where they left off last year, when they gained their first win on the last week of the season to finish with a final record of 1-9. Case Western Reserve, however, had other ideas.

Oberlin struck first with a first quarter touchdown and led the game 7-0. Case Western retaliated quickly, scoring 27 unanswered points. Things looked grim as the Yeomen trailed the game by 20 points with only 28 minutes remaining. The Yeomen needed offensive production and defensive stops, and that is exactly what they got.

The Yeomen scored three touchdowns, accumulating 20 points and keeping Case Western out of the end zone. The Yeomen’s late offensive charge was led by sophomore quarterback Andy Stein and first-year running back R.V. Carroll. Stein connected twice with sophomore wide receiver Cassius Harris for touchdowns, while Carroll ran for one.

This surge, however, proved to be too little too late, as Case Western hit a field goal at the 13:14 mark of the fourth quarter to put them ahead for good. The game ended with a final score of 30-27.

Coach Jeff Ramsey said of the late effort, “We fought back well, and we minimized our mistakes. We’ll move on from this and improve.” The Yeomen are now 0-1 and travel to Macalester College for their second game of the season.
