Field hockey rolling

The Oberlin College fall sports season started this past Saturday, Sept. 2 in Lexington, as the Yeowomen field hockey team rocked Transylvania University 7-1.

Thirty-five minutes through the match, the Yeowomen found themselves tied with the Pioneers at 1-1. In the second half, however, seniors Umra Omar and Meg Reitz led the Yeowomen to six unanswered goals.

Reitz began the scoring for the Yeowomen with a goal 7:46 into the contest, putting them up 1-0. The Pioneers went on to tie it up, but not for long as first-year Abigail Brox scored the goal that would put the Yeowomen up for good. The Yeowomen proceeded to score at will as Omar scored two goals within four minutes, both assisted by Reitz.

First-year Lela Hull, second-year Ashley Allen and third-year Claire Cheney all chipped in with goals for the Yeowomen. “We regrouped and did a better job of communicating in the second half,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said.

The second game of the Yeowomen’s season came on the road versus Centre College, and proved to be much tougher than their first. Reitz opened the scoring at 50:25 on an assist from Hull to put the Yeowomen up 1-0. Centre tied the game at 41:07. Oberlin answered back as senior Rosemary Mudry scored the Yeowomen’s second goal of the match on an assist from Reitz. Centre came back to tie the game, but Reitz once again rose to the occasion, scoring what would be the winning goal as the Yeowomen won 3-2.

“We came out a little tired, but we finished strong today. Our second half is a sign of how fit we are as a team,” Ranieri remarked after the win.

Oberlin takes their 2-0 record into their next game at Kenyon College.
