Yeowomen continue to improve

Beastly maneuver: Sophomore defender Sarah Kotcon takes a shot on goal.

The Oberlin College women’s soccer team has been holding its own in the conference this week against two steadfast rivals.

On Sunday the Yeowomen took on Anderson University. Junior Leah Bellow-Handelman gave Oberlin the initial lead in the first half with a well-put deflection off the top of the goal. Anderson answered back by tying up the score 1-1 before halftime.

First-year Caitlin Millford sealed the deal for Oberlin with her goal in the second half.

“It was a good game for us,” said Head Coach Andy Nelson. “We were stronger than the other team. We didn’t play as well as we can. We played hard, though.”

On Tuesday afternoon the Oberlin women’s soccer team gave Otterbein College a run for their money. Oberlin lost the match 1-0. However, the Yeowomen played hard and showed that they have what it takes to compete with the big teams.

“We played well. We were outshot 19-2 but the good news is that we played against one of the top 20 teams and only lost 1-0,” remarked Nelson after the game.

Oberlin competes in one of the most competitive soccer conferences in the country and the Yeowomen have continually shown that they can play with the best.

“Honestly, they look great! These girls book it up and down the field,” commented a fan, sophomore Christine Politis, cheering on the sideline in Tuesday’s game. “Leah Bellow-Handelman, Jess Greenberg, the whole team; they’re beasts!”

Fans and opponents have not stopped commenting on the level of play the Yeowomen have demonstrated this season.

“The team has improved a lot. We just can’t accept improving. We’ve got to keep moving forward,” said Nelson.

The Yeowomen proved they could move foward in their win against Lake Erie College this Wednesday. The Yeowomen only allowed two shots on goal throughout the entire game.

The Yeowomen kick it again in a non-conference game against Muskingum College on Saturday at 1 pm.
