Notes from the Student Senate

1) Elections: Student Senate is holding elections. There are 9 seats open right now. Nominations opened on Tuesday. Student Senate is the main advocacy group for students with the administration and faculty. We meet every Sunday from 7-10 p.m. in Wilder 215, and our meetings are open to everyone. Each Senator also holds two office hours each week. All senators also get paid, which means that you can do Senate for part of your work-study if you need to. To nominate yourself or someone else, or to get more information, e-mail senate@oberlin.edu.

The Election Schedule is as follows:

  • Nominations close: Thursday, Sept. 22, 11:59p.m.
  • Candidate statements due latest: Friday, Sept. 23.
  • Get-to-know-the-candidates event: Friday, Sept. 23, 4:30p.m.
  • Election begins (Polls open online): Saturday, Sept. 24, 12:01a.m.
  • Election closes: Saturday, Oct. 1, 2:00am

We will publish statements from as many of the candidates as we can in next week’s Oberlin Review.

2) Committees and the strategic plan: There are many other ways to be involved in campus policy and politics beyond student senate. Oberlin College has over 60 student-faculty-staff committees, on everything from educational policy to housing and dining to judicial violations to purchasing. There are also six new working groups forming to oversee the implementation of the strategic plan. These working groups and committees all need to have students. You may want to be on one yourself. To find out more, go to www.oberlin.edu/stuorg/senate/committees/

3) Resignations: Danielle Indovino has resigned from Student Senate.
