Lacrosse lacking offensive spark

Seeking warmer weather and sleeker fields, the Oberlin women’s lacrosse team travelled to Southern California over Spring Break. The team faced stiff competition, opening against Colorado College, a top 10 team. The Yeo-laxers went on to face the University of Redlands and Claremont Mudd Scripps. The Yeo-laxers dropped all three games but had several outstanding periods of play.

Against Colorado College, the Yeowomen were down 13-1 at the half but actually outscored the top ranked team in the second half, 4-2. Junior Beth Sebian notched a hat trick while fellow junior Meg Reitz and first-year Kira Thorien also found the back of the net.

In their first game back from Spring Break, the women’s lacrosse team got off to a rocky start. On Thursday, SUNY-Fedonia traveled to Oberlin for a sloppy game in the rain. Fedonia jumped out to an early lead with three goals by Nicole Van Etten.

Senior April Gentile-Miserandino responded with a dodge to the cage that resulted in a goal scored from point-blank range. Fredonia answered with six straight goals, going into the half with a 9-1 lead.

The Yeowomen played the second half much tighter, but failed to close the gap. Fredonia scored five goals in the second half, while the Yeowomen scored two. Juniors Christine Castilla and Sebian both had goals for the women.

The final score did not reflect possession time, which was split fairly evenly betwen the two teams. The Yeowomen’s undoing was their lack of offensive tenacity and inability to maintain possession on dropped balls.

The Yeowomen go into the weekend at 1-4. They have yet to begin conference play. Their first NCAC game of the season will be next Tuesday when Denison University travels to Oberlin for a game at 4:30 p.m.

This weekend the Yeowomen travel to New York to play two games. On Saturday they take on SUNY-Brockport in Brockport, NY for a 4:30 p.m. game. The next day the women go to Rochester to take on Cazenovia at noon.
