ResEd, Senate hold forum

The full Residential Education staff met with students last night to discuss the changes in the upcoming years in terms of housing, programming and working towards meeting specific goals outlined in the strategic plan.

The meeting, organized by Student Senate, focused mainly on housing as students begin the selection process in the days ahead. Of particular concern is ResEd’s plan to make Oberlin more of a “residential campus” by reducing the number of juniors and seniors released to live off-campus.

“I don’t think it’s in anybody’s mind to make Oberlin an entirely residential campus,” said Michele Gross, the associate director of ResEd, who went on to explain that a residential campus specifically refers to a non-commuter campus.

Molly Tyson, the interim director of ResEd, did say “There will be more programs in the dorms; it will decrease repetition between our programs and the residential assistants’ programs.”

All the administrators present were enthusiastic about the chance to get student input as they moved forward with the changes.

“What’s exiting is that we have some time for more dialogue,” said Assitant Director of ResEd Kevin Williams. “We’re going to grow and learn.”

Gross laid out some of the areas in which ResEd was looking for more input.

“What were some of the things that students valued on campus?” she said. “How will things change for students living off campus? Are we moving in the right direction? If not, we need to talk about this.”

However, Tyson was sure to point out that “we cannot squelch all anxieties.”
