Yeo-laxers let wins escape

Last week the Oberlin women’s lacrosse team suffered two losses. Last Sunday the Yeowomen lost 12-7 in a home game against the University of Puget Sound Loggers.

Oberlin kept the game close throughout the first half. The Loggers scored the first goal 2:29 into the game. Senior April Gentile-Miserandino answered just over three minutes later from a free shot position. Puget Sound scored three of the next four goals to jump out to a 4-2 lead with five minutes remaining in the half.

Over the final five minutes of the period, the Yeowomen clawed their way back, outscoring the Loggers 3-1. They were lead by goals from junior Meg Reitz, senior Alison Olbrycht and first-year Rose Reid.

Coming out of the break the Yeowomen took their first lead of the game. Just 1:39 into the second half senior Alice Powlen scored Oberlin’s sixth goal of the game. Unfortunately for the Yeowomen, it went downhill from there. Puget Sound went on to score five unanswered goals, leading to the victory.

First-year Kaitlin Barrer scored the only other goal of the game for the Yeowomen. “There are pieces that are great but they don’t seem to be coming together,” said senior Jill McFarland. “The freshmen in particular are playing really well.”

On Wednesday the Yeowomen traveled to Delaware, Ohio to compete against Ohio Wesleyan University. Oberlin struggled from the start as Ohio Wesleyan scored the first three goals. Once again for the Yeowomen, Gentile-Miserandino was first to get them on the board.

Junior Beth Sebian and Barrer scored the only other goals of the game for the Yeowomen, with Barrer putting in two. Oberlin lost the contest 17-4. “The midfield transition did pretty well. We connected on passes, but we just need to make our shots. We missed the cage wide, and have been shooting at the goalie’s stick a lot,” said sophomore Lynn Gerbec.

McFarland continues to look optimistically at the team’s results. “Everyone is working really hard,” she said. “The defense has been pretty strong throughout the past couple of games. If anything we can get a lot more aggressive. The teams we play are a lot more aggressive and I don’t think we are used to that.”

The Yeowomen’s current record stands at 2-9 with a 0-3 conference record. They will look to improve on both records on Saturday when Wittenberg University travels to Oberlin for a 1 p.m. start.
