Mount Union meet a success for track
The Oberlin men’s and women’s track and field teams turned in stellar permormances at the Mount Union College meet last Saturday. “It was a non-scored event with a lot of people winning; we also had quite a few people who improved upon their own record,” said Head Coach Jason Hudson. “I think we had three personal records total and that’s just great. It shows that people are really trying their hardest and that always helps to improve the team as a whole.” First-year Anthony Osei led the Yeomen with a first place finish in the long jump. He leapt to victory with a distance of 21’8 3/4”. Senior Mike Pennino also helped carry the team, placing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:22.20. Junior Dan Keeney ran a personal best in the 800-meter with a time of 2:00.80, finishing 11th. Also running the 800 were sophomore Matt Ferris-Smith and senior Dewayne Evans. Ferris-Smith finished fifth with a time of 1:58.70 while Evans came in seventh with a time of 1:59.40. Other outstanding performances included first-year Cody Hartley’s sixth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (58.24), senior Shean Perry’s fourth place in the pole vault (14’0”), the 4x400-meter relay team’s fifth place at 3:30.70 and sophomore Micah Peterson’s sixth place in the 400 meters at 52.90. On the Yeowomen’s end, seniors Teresa Collins and Shannon Morris led the way with first place finishes in their respective events. Collins ran the 400-meter in 59.93, while Morris ran the 800 in a time of 2:21.40. Morris also placed first in the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:52.60. Senior Leslie Bosworth came in third in two events, the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 16.23 and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.12. First-year Bronwen Davies, the Yeowomen’s sole heptathlete, placed in five events. Her highest event finish was a fourth place victory in the triple jump at 33’00”. She placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles, running 17.27, seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:11.71, seventh in the high jump at 4’7.75” and eighth in the long jump with a distance of 14’11.5”. “I think that this meet is a great sign as we move towards the conference meet,” said Hudson. “I’m very confident about this team. We have a lot more to go, we certainly haven’t peaked yet. I know that we will improve our record and ourselves from the indoor season. We’re going to move up from that record. This meet just proved to me that we’re slowly gelling as a team.” The men’s and women’s teams travel to the All-Ohio Championships
at Ohio Wesleyan next Saturday. Events begin at 9 a.m.
