Lacrosse drops first two conference matches

Moving out: Sophomore defender Lynn Gerbec runs a ball onto attack while first-year Beth Gula provides back-up.

Last Tuesday, first-year Kaitlin Barrer began conference play for the women’s lacrosse team with a goal to take a 1-0 lead over Denison University. Unfortunately for the Yeowomen, the Big Red of Denison countered with four straight goals.

Barrer scored her second goal of the game with 54 seconds remaining in the half to cut Denison’s lead to two. But 19 seconds later Denison yet again answered Oberlin’s goal, to go into the half with a 5-2 lead.

Denison hit the boards first in the second half but Oberlin sounded back with a goal from senior April Gentile-Miserandino. Unable to maintain its offensive momentum, Oberlin was outscored 7-3. With less than four minutes left, Oberlin received some last minute offensive heat from sophomore Annie Chow and junior Beth Sebian, each of whom found the net once.

The Big Red outshot the Yeowomen 33-16, a margin clearly manifested in the final 12-5 score. Denison may have won in the books but the game reflected a turning point in the Yeowomen’s style of play.

From the opening draw it was evident that Oberlin brought a new level of intensity and communication to the field. The Yeo-laxers outhustled the Big Red, scooping up most of the ground balls and causing more turnovers.

Oberlin continued conference play on Thursday against Kenyon College. The opening sequence of the game paralleled the team’s performance against Denison. The Ladies and the Yeowomen traded goals for the opening minutes before Kenyon took off on a 6-0 run.

The Yeowomen lost the spark that fueled them in the beginning of the first half and allowed Kenyon to dramatically control the possession time in the second half. The Yeowomen were held scoreless after halftime while the Ladies racked up the goals and ended the game 15-4. Barrer, seniors Alice Powlen and Ali Olbrycht and first-year Kira Thorien all scored for Oberlin.
