Yeo-Runners hit their stride at the perfect time
These spikes are made for running: And that’s just what junior Dan Keeney did.

The Oberlin men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams had an incredibly successful final home meet last Friday night. Four records were broken, two in pole vaulting. Senior Shean Perry broke his own record in pole vaulting, clearing 14’5”.

First-year Rachel Silverman modestly reflected about breaking her own pole vaulting record reaching a height of 8’5”. “It was a good day for pole vaulting,” she said. “The meet in general was a huge success, and a lot of fun.”

The Oberlin Yeowomen broke two records and won seven events at the meet. Senior Shannon Morris broke her own record in the 800 meters by carving .05 seconds off her previous record, recorded just last week. Morris finished first with a time of 2:19.58.

Senior Teresa Collins finished the 55-meter dash in 7.57, placing first for the Yeowomen. Other winning team members were first-year Lily Krichels in the long jump (14’10.5”), junior Vernicia Elie in the triple jump (31’8.75”) and first-year Steele Hearn in the shotput (28’3”).

The Oberlin Yeowomen also placed first in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:14.04. “It was our last home meet and a really good one for the seniors,” said sophomore Katie Au. “There was a good turnout, and the team broke four records, two of them pole vaulting records. It was so great to break that many records and have such a successful meet in front of so many of our fans.”

The Yeomen had an equally successful meet, with impressive performances in many of the events, culminating in the breaking of two school records. Sophomore Edo Bedzra downed his lap in 23.13, beating Bret Petersen’s 2003 200-meter record of 23.28.

First-year Anthony Osei placed first in the long jump at 20’7.25”. “The meet was a great success,” said Head Coach Jason Hudson. “With four records broken, it was a banner day for the team. It shows that we’re peaking at the right time with the conference meet coming up this week. It really shows that there are great things to come. The team is certainly not done breaking records. On the contrary, we’re just getting started. I just can’t wait to see how the team does at the conference, and how our players compete against other teams.”

The men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams finish the season next week at the NCAC Championships at Denison.
