Track and Field places third, fourth at meet

The Oberlin College Track and Field teams traveled to Baldwin-Wallace College last Friday, competing successfully in the night’s meet. The Yeomen placed third in the competition with 72 points, while the Yeowomen placed fourth with 55.5 points.

There appeared to be a positive reaction to the teams’ results. “We were really happy with the way that we placed,” said first-year Kate Cook. “Of course, we always want to improve, but I am confident that we will. Coach [Jason] Hudson has been really great and now that the team has become comfortable with each other we really are performing better.”

Leading the Yeowomen, senior Leslie Bosworth finished second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.99 seconds. Along with this impressive time, Bosworth also helped two of Oberlin’s relay teams to place third.

The 4x200-meter relay, which also included sophomore Anna Schuettge, first-year Lily Krichels and senior Teresa Collins, finished in 1:52.58, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Bosworth, Krichels, first-year Anna Chernin and Collins ran 4:24.07.

Reflecting on the relays Krichels said, “Our 4x200 really improved because we had been working hard on our hand-offs. For the 4x400 we definitely had to get ourselves psyched because one of our key players was hurt. I was really proud of how well our players could fill her shoes and be so successful in the race.”

Third was a popular place for the Yeowomen at the Baldwin-Wallace meet, as shown by the relay and the competition of first-year Alex Petek, sophomore Ariane Burwell, sophomore Sarah Newman and first-year Bronwyn Davies.

Petek secured her third-place with a run of 1:26.44 in the 500-meter, while Burwell garnered her third-place by finishing up her mile run in 5:26.44.

Newman received another third place in the 5000-meter (20:58.44). Davies, reaching a height of 33’9.25” in the triple jump, received third for the Yeowomen.

On the Yeomen’s side, sophomore Edo Bedzra led the team, securing first place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.68. Bedzra also led off the men’s 4x200, which ended with a time of 1:34.97 and second place. The relay team included sophomore Isaac Cooley and first-years Cody Hartley and Cassius Harris.

The Yeomen placed in the top three five more times during the meet, lead by sophomores Matt Ferris-Smith and John Shaw, junior Robby Tinker, first-year Anthony Osei and senior Anthony Hudgins.

Ferris-Smith placed second, running the mile in 4:32.43. Tinker and Shaw both ran the 5000-meter, winning second (16:17.39) and third (16:18.53), respectively. Osei finished out the long jump in third place with a height of 20’9.75”, while Hudgins placed third in shot put at 43’0.50”. “Overall I’d say we had a very successful meet. We do have some things to work on, but as we do, we’ll just keep improving,” said Hudson.
