Swimmers are lead by Selenak
Swimming and diving competes at NCAC meet

The Yeoswimmers raced to an impressive season finale at the NCAC swimming and diving championships in Canton, Ohio this past weekend. The three-day event was marked by numerous personal bests and shattered school records.

On day one alone, the women’s team had several members place in the all-Oberlin top five.

First-year Kiri Ulmschneider’s time of 5:19.89 in the 500-yard freestyle places her third in the Oberlin record books and earned her 15th place. She also placed ninth in the 400-yard individual medley and 10th in the 200-yard butterfly.

“It was fun and exciting. There were a lot of best times,” said sophomore Melissa Ising. “Since there were so many PBs [personal bests] all the hard work of the season really paid off.”

First-year Maura Selenak had three impressive swims for the Yeowomen. She placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, eighth in the 200-yard breastroke and 17th in the 50-yard freestyle. Her 100-yard breaststroke time was good enough to meet the NCAA ‘B’ qualifying mark.

The men had top finishers in several events. In the 500-yard freestyle, junior Thomas Limouze finished seventh, followed by senior Ben Pierce in eighth place. Junior Zach Kaplan-Moss finished in 16th place.

Pierce also came out strong in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:45.72, good enough for ninth place. Junior Craig Betchart finished a place behind him in 1:47.67.

In his third individual events of the meet, the 1650-yard freestyle, Pierce posted another top 10 finish. He placed seventh, followed by Limouze in eighth place, and Kaplan-Moss in 12th place.

First-years Daniel Timchak and Cory Myers were the only two divers to compete for Oberlin. In the 3-meter diving competition, Timchak finished in sixth place with 288.35 points and Myers finished in seventh with 274.95 points.

Timchak found even greater success in the 1-meter diving, finishing second in the NCAC with 331.95 points. Myers finished eighth with 238.15 points.

The men’s team finished with 596 points, good enough to place them above Hiram and Ohio Wesleyan, for seventh place. They far exceeded last year’s mark of 494 points, when they also finished in seventh place. The women finished in eighth place with 450 points. They also surpassed their mark from last year of 406 points, when they also finished in eighth place.
