Men’s Basketball Hopes to Rebound

The Oberlin men’s basketball team has played three tough games this month, losing to Wabash, Adrian College and Wooster.

Against Wabash, the Yeomen had a tough battle for the first ten minutes. The Wabash ‘Little Giants,’ however, used a 10-0 run to open up the game. Oberlin was never able to recover from this run and proceeded to fall by a score of 90-59.

Sophomore guard Matt Godwin led the Yeomen against Wabash with 22 points and five rebounds. Godwin shot eight for 11 in the game and six for nine from behind the arc.

Against Adrian College, the Yeomen fought hard and trailed by just three at the break. Adrian used a 12-4 run to build a double-digit lead in the first 3:27 of the second half. Oberlin could not counter this run with one of their own and could never cut the deficit to less than seven, eventually losing by a score of 61-51.

Junior Quinton Spencer led the Yeomen with 13 points and nine rebounds. First-year Omari Hall added ten for the Yeomen off the bench.

Wooster rolled to a big win over Oberlin on Dec. 7. Seven different Fighting Scots scored in double figures as Wooster won 112-53. Even in the 59-point defeat, the Yeomen had some bright spots.

First-years Mike Loll and Bradley Spelich each scored in double figures, netting 12 and 14 respectively. Spencer scored 15 points, grabbing 13 rebounds. The Yeomen will look to better utilize such strong performances in trying to get their first win of the year.

“I think our first win will be crucial,” said first-year Noah Goldman. “Once we get the taste of winning, we will be hungry for more.”

With these three losses, the Yeomen drop to 0-9 on the year. The Yeomen will be looking for their first victory tomorrow when they play at Hiram College.
