OC soccer concludes their season

Season finale: First-year goalkeeper Kathleen Keating snatches the ball from an Earlham player on Saturday.

In what would prove to be their second to last game of the season, the Oberlin College women’s soccer team won their only conference game last Tuesday against Kenyon College. With steady wind and rain, the Yeowomen stepped up to the pressure and played their best game of the season.

First-year Joelle Sesar scored off an assist from sophomore Sarah Kotcon in the first half of the game. Kenyon answered back with a goal three minutes later. The Yeowomen were able to seal the deal in the second half with a goal by junior Anne Beeke with 8:40 left in the game.

“We haven’t beaten Kenyon in awhile. It was our best game mentality-wise. We stayed in the game to do the work we needed to do. We got it done,” commented first-year Bret Nolan.

“We knew we had a chance in the Kenyon game. We played our hardest. We did the best that we could.”

On Saturday, the Yeowomen concluded their 2005 season against Earlham College. Going into the game, Oberlin knew they had a chance, however, they were unable to knock any goals in.

First-year goalkeeper Kathleen Keating put up six saves in the game with an impressive 94 saves total on the season.

Even though the Oberlin College women’s soccer team’s season ended on Saturday, the Yeowomen are already looking ahead to next season.

“The team has come a long way. They played a lot of pickup games and worked on their fitness before the season started this year. We are still doing three additional practices a week up to the conference final four. Most teams would not continue to practice. This team is very dedicated,” stated Head Coach Andy Nelson.

Nelson has been pushing his team to work harder in the off-season so that Oberlin will be able to compete with the teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

“We are playing teams that can compete with the top 20 teams in the country, week in and week out. If we can compete in our conference, we can compete against any team in the country,” Nelson said.

Nolan summed up the season by describing Oberlin’s team chemistry: “Playing on the soccer team has been one of the best experiences I have had at Oberlin. The way all the girls get along. I have never been on such a close sports team.”

The Yeowomen end their season with an overall record of 6-10-2 and a record of 1-6-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
