Football gets trampled on road by Little Giants

Dog pile: The Yeomen tackle a Wabash player during their game on Oct. 1.

The Yeomen football team had another tough loss on Oct. 8 in Crawfordsville, Ind. The Wabash Little Giants beat Oberlin by a score of 42-7. Oberlin fought tough but could not manage much offense against the NCAC’s best defense.

The first quarter saw a defensive struggle with neither team getting on the board. Early in the second quarter, this changed as Wabash got on the board with a 93-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Wabash scored another touchdown before the half and went to the break with a 14-0 lead. The second half saw another Little Giant touchdown before Oberlin finally got on the board with a touchdown of their own.

A 27-yard completion from sophomore Andy Stein to senior Chad Kutting set up a one-yard touchdown run for first-year tailback RV. Carroll. Unfortunately for Oberlin, this touchdown was both the first and the final points the Wabash defense would allow and the highlight of the day for the Yeomen ground game.

Oberlin was held to just 75 yards on 40 carries, an average of 1.75 yards per carry. Wabash on the other hand had 154 yards on 25 carries, averaging over six yards a carry. In controlling the ground, Wabash forced Oberlin to pass more often, and that resulted in two interceptions, crippling the Yeomen’s chances.

On the ensuing drive after the Yeomen touchdown, senior Vance Murphy intercepted a Wabash pass, giving the Yeomen a chance for a comeback. With the rushing game in disarray, Oberlin was forced to go to the air.

Wabash intercepted Stein on the very next play after Murphy’s pick. This interception ended any realistic chance of a comeback by Oberlin, and to ensure this, Wabash put up 21 unanswered points to end the game.

The loss dropped Oberlin to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Oberlin will look to rebound from this when Earlham College comes to Oberlin this Saturday at 1 p.m.
