Volleyball strives to regain winning ways

Beastly perserverance: Senior co-captain Katie Au shows her frustration on the court.

With only two wins to its name, the Oberlin volleyball team is setting its goals high in the Big Apple, hoping for a victory against Hilbert College. The Yeowomen travel to New York this weekend for a non-conference match, with the intent to win both games they will play. With a lack of victory from the previous weekend, the team agrees that all was not a loss.

“I think that within the past two weeks, we have made a big improvement,” says senior captain Katie Au. The Yeowomen matched up against Kenyon this past Saturday, Oct. 8, and fell only a few points short of a win.

Oberlin was no match for Kenyon’s strategic hitting performance and consistent play. Seniors Jeanne Feuerstein and Au both had a defensive record of 15 digs for the game. Sophomore setter Deysi Villarreal led the team with a total of 10 kills. “We had a really good game. It was pretty close, a big improvement from the tournament at Baldwin Wallace,” said Villarreal.

The Yeowomen all agree that the fans make the game a whole lot more exciting. “Last weekend our fans were awesome!” said Au excitedly. “The softball team made us a bunch of posters. We all truly appreciated it.”

Hoping to improve their level of play in New York, Villarreal says, “our body language is improving, and the team is really melding. I am so excited to just go to New York and play our hardest!”

With only seven games left, Oberlin is determined to achieve what they have been striving towards for months. They will take on Hilbert College this weekend, and then on to Wooster next week. The Yeowomen now stand at 2-14 on the season and 0-4 in the NCAC.
