Committee discloses cases

To the Editors:

As required by the charter of the Student Honor Committee (the OC Honor Code), I am submitting a summary of cases heard by the SHC during the Fall 2003 semester.

Oct. 12, 2003: A College student was found responsible of plagiarism. The student was placed on Honor Probation and required to complete a five to seven page paper describing research techniques and a three to four page paper discussing a case of plagiarism in the news and its consequences.

Nov. 23, 2003: A College student was found responsible of plagiarism. The student was placed on Honor Probation and required to complete a one- to two-page paper detailing resources available on campus for help in dealing with time management and study skills, a five- to seven-page paper discussing a case of plagiarism in the news from the past five years and its consequences, and 10 hours of Required Service to the Oberlin Community.

Nov. 23, 2003: Two College students were found responsible (in separate hearings) of falsifying attendance records. The students were placed on Honor Probation and were each required to write a paper about the historical significance of the signature and its application to the Honor Code.

Nov. 23, 2003: A College student was found responsible of plagiarism. The student was placed on Honor Probation, and required to complete a 15 page paper discussing three or four cases of plagiarism that have appeared in the media in the past five years and 40 hours of Required Service to the Oberlin Community.

The student failed to respond to the Committee’s repeated attempts to contact him; in addition, the student failed to complete his assigned sanction, resulting in a second violation of the Honor Code. As a result, the student was suspended for a term of one semester.
