Students harassed
Multiple students report strange man lurking

A white male about 40 years old has reportedly sexually harassed two Oberlin off-campus residents.

On April 22 and 23 Oberlin Police logs indicate that calls were received from two different women claiming that a person of similar description had been either in or around their house. However three incidents may have actually been reported.

Senior Sarah Dolecki said she was napping in her room around 3 p.m. last Thursday when she heard her door open.

“I figured it was one of my housemates seeing if I was there, so I ignored it,” Dolecki said. “But after about 30 seconds, I realized that someone was watching me, so I turned to face the door and caught a glimpse of a middle aged Caucasian man looking at me. He turned and ran away, but I caught a glimpse of a well-worn work boot and jeans. I called the police.”

Oberlin Police received another call the same day at 4:13 p.m. from another girl who had woken up up to find a white male, around 5’9” with sandy hair and green eyes, in her house, according to police logs.

The man said he was looking for a girl named Jennifer, who he claimed to have dropped off the day before. He stated repeatedly that he meant her no harm. The caller told him to leave and went to class. When she returned the man was on her porch, but left after she told him he had the wrong house. She then called the police.

The police department received another call on April 23 at 4:51 p.m. The caller said that a white man, about 6’, about 40 years old with light brown hair and a moustache had been in her back yard the day before.

He had asked for Rachel, whom the caller had told him did not live there. The caller said the man had introduced himself as John, and had asked her to have sex with him.

Safety and Security received a call in the first week of March about a similar occurrence.

“My housemate saw a middle-aged white man in the corner of my room looking at my desk,” senior Ariella Cohen said. “The man introduced himself as Jim and said he was looking for Elizabeth and made allusions to her being a prostitute. I filed a report with Safety and Security they told me that they knew the guy well. They said he was a townsperson who sometimes bothered College students when he got drunk, but was harmless.”

According to the report, the residents of the house found a note from the previous occupant relating that she had seen a strange man looking in her bedroom window.

The security report also stated that a female student advised last week that she found a man in her bedroom watching her as she slept. In this instance, the man left without incident and she filed no complaint at the time.

Without a formal complaint, the city police can do little more than look for individuals matching the description given to them. No sketches of the assailant have been released.
