Students offer Guatemalan dinner

Oberlin Students in Solidarity with the people of Guatemala will serve a Guatemalan dinner in Spanish House Saturday at 6 p.m. following a concert by residents.

The dinner hopes to raise money for a middle school project that plans to serve as a self-sustainable school for an indigenous community in Guatemala.

OSSGUA began in 2003 after 10 Oberlin students attended a semi-annual human rights delegation to Guatemala. OSSGUA primarily focuses on education and solidarity actions. It sent members to the April 2003 Latin American Solidarity Conference and the annual School of the Americas Rally in Ft. Benning, Ga. OSSGUA brought five speakers to Oberlin this year. Group members have given presentations to classrooms at schools in Wellington, Oberlin and members’ hometowns.

OSSGUA is promoting a future Winter Term delegation to Guatemala and is working on a letter exchange program between local high school students and students in rural Mayan communities in Guatemala.
