Yeoman pole-vaulter breaks record at Case meet
Several top finishes for Yeo-runners and -jumpers

Comin around the bend: Yeorunners make use of the indoor track in a recent practice.

A Yeoman pole-vaulter broke a school record at the Oberlin Indoor Track and Field Invitational Friday, while the women’s team swept the triple jump. Allegheny College, Case Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Hiram College, Notre Dame College of Ohio, Walsh University and Defiance College all participated in the competition.

Sophomore pole-vaulter Shean Perry placed second with a height of 4.25m, breaking the previous school record.

Perry was not expecting a strong showing that day.

“I had been fighting a bad cold that day and was a little surprised and relieved to vault as well as I did,” he said.

According to Perry, he hasn’t been training any differently recently, but he added, “I think I just understand the pole vault better than I used to and have more confidence in my abilities.”

In the women’s triple jump, senior Shannon Houlihan, junior Teresa Collins and senior Faye Doherty claimed the top three spots with 10.82m, 10.16m and 10.00m, respectively.

Houlihan also took third in the long jump with 4.53m, while Faye followed in fifth with 4.32m and took third in the high jump with a height of 1.51m.

Second place in the 55m dash went to sophomore Danielle Brooks with a time of 7.64 seconds. She and Collins then placed near the top in the 200m dash, Brooks taking fourth with 27.57 and Collins running 27.51 for third.

However, in the 400m dash, Collins outran the competition, grabbing first place with a time of 1:00.21, while Houlihan took first in the 55m hurdles with a time of 9.22 seconds.

The women’s A relay team came in fifth for the 4x400m with 4:43.70.

For the Yeomen, junior Ben Stanley grabbed second in the 3000m run with 9:34.84 and first-year Travis Grout followed his lead with fourth place and a time of 9:43.36.

In the 4x200m relay, the A team came in second with a time of 1:36.17, then took fifth in the 4x400m relay.

Another first-year, Edo Bedzra, ran 23.52 seconds in the 200m dash for fourth and 6.79 seconds in the 55m dash for seventh.

With a time of 52.87 seconds, junior Bret Petersen placed second in the 400m dash. He says he still hopes to break the school record this season.

First-year Quentin Jones checked in with a time of 8.52 seconds, good for third in the 55m hurdles.

In men’s shotput, senior Anthony Hudgins threw for 12.58m, taking fourth and first-year John Hepp came close behind in sixth with a distance of 12.04m.
