Men’s tennis still undefeated

Wait for it: Sophmore David Cotter anticipates his opponent's next move.

The Oberlin men’s tennis team has started the season in an impressive fashion, beating up on Otterbein College and Ohio Wesleyan University over the weekend.

After sweeping Malone College to open the season, the Yeomen continued the streak by defeating Otterbein 7-0. Both the number one and number two singles, seniors Jamie Frankel and Marian Bocek, respectively, defeated their opponents in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Frankel gave great credit to Bocek. “Bocek played a great match, he showed that he is one of the better players in the NCAC,” he said.

Juniors Nick Ogren and Mark Knee, sophomore David Cotter and first-year Arthur Zeyda filled the third through sixth single spots and won in identical fashion, 6-0, 6-1.

All three doubles teams results were just as promising. Frankel and Cotter formed the number one team and they defeated Otterbein’s number one team 8-2. Ogren and Knee won the number two doubles slot 8-5 in the closest of all three doubles matches. Sophomore James Rosenheim and Zeyda handled the number three spot with an 8-1 victory.

Sunday was the weekend’s key match, as it began conference play for the Yeomen. Ohio Wesleyan took to the courts early Sunday afternoon only to lose 6-1.

Head coach Don Hunsinger used the same lineup on Sunday except for the number five and six singles. He inserted Rosenheim into the fifth slot and bumped Cotter one place down to the number six singles.

Cotter was the only singles player to lose, falling 7-5, 6-3. Rosenheim was victorious, taking three sets to finish off his opponent, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6. All four top singles players won in straight sets.

All three doubles lineups remained the same against Ohio Wesleyan. The number one pair, Frankel and Cotter, lost 8-4, but the number two and three teams won, giving the doubles’ point to the Yeomen. The Yeomen defeated Ohio Wesleyan 6-1.

Scoring in tennis is comprised of six singles matches and three doubles matches. Each singles match counts as a point, and all three doubles matches combine for one point, allowing for a possible seven points to be won.

For the first time in three matches this season, the Yeomen failed to shut out an opponent.

“I don’t think anyone was happy with how they played. That’s scary considering we beat a good team,” Frankel said after the match.

The Ohio Wesleyan contest is clearly a match to build upon as the season goes on. “We are sending a message to the rest of the conference,” Frankel said. “Also, we are sending a message to ourselves that we could have a special season if we buckle down a little more at this point in the season.”

The Yeomen will be 3-0 overall (1-0 in conference) when they seek to continue their success at 1 p.m. on Saturday at home against Capital University.
