Women’s lacrosse hits field

One on one: The women’s lacrosse team play one on one against eachother in practice this past week..

The 2004 Oberlin College women’s lacrosse team returns a strong roster this season. Returning for the Yeowomen are an experienced midfielder a veteran goalkeeper who will be aided by a large number of first-year who will give the team the scoring potential needed to improve on last year’s losing record.

Unfortunately for the Yeowomen, the graduation of Brie Quinn, OC ’04, has left in the offense. Quinn was an NCAC All-Star and was an offensive weapon for the Yeowomen. Looking to fill this hole are senior Justine Strayhorn and junior Alive Powlen, who together were able to put more than 20 balls into the back of the net last season. Added to the scoring duo of Strayhorn and Powlen will be returning starter junior April Gentile-Miserandino.

On the midfield line, the Yeowomen will be bringing back several veterans including sophomore Christina Castilla, who earned All-NCAC honors last season for her impressive numbers posted for ground balls. Susan Armitage, a senior from Los Altos, Calif. and Castilla will be joined by four first-years: Annie Chow, Callie Gropp, Janine Heiser and Meghan Schott.

The defensive side of the ball will be welcoming back junior goalkeeper Sarah Pilzer, who earned NCAC “Newcomer of the Year” honors in 2002. Heading into her third season on the Yeowomen team, Pilzer will be looking to improve on her .628 save percentage from her rookie year.

Last season Pilzer had almost 200 saves in the 12 games that she started in. Solidifying the defense will be juniors Alice Macgill, Jill McFarland and Alison Obrycht as well as sophomore Elizabeth Sebian and first-year Lynn Gerbec.

The combination of experience and fresh players should give the defense the depth they need to post positive goals-against numbers this year and lead the Yeowomen to a much improved season.
