WAVE program open to all

To the Editors:

I would like to invite all students who receive federal work-study to apply for positions as full-time teachers in Oberlin College’s 2004 summer WAVE program. WAVE is an acronym for Words Are Very Empowering; this is a purely academic program that aims specifically, but not exclusively, to help academically challenged, unmotivated children with basic reading, writing, arithmetic, etc.

With support from the Center for Service and Learning, students receive $3000 for the 40-hour a week, 10-week program that starts in late May or early June.

Regrettably, WAVE offers no other benefits beyond the joy, excitement and the incredibly rich experience of teaching black, white and other young children all summer long.

Students should know that Oberlin College offers local children free academic help on a 24/7/365 basis. No other college in America rivals Oberlin in this respect. Students interested in keeping Oberlin far ahead of its more than 3000 pursuers should e-mail me ASAP at booker.peek@oberlin.edu.
