Yeowomen lose final game

The Yeowomen basketball team ended their season on two low notes as they dropped their final two games to Earlham and Wittenberg on Feb. 21 and 24, respectively.

The Yeowomen went into their final home game against Earlham last Saturday with high hopes of sending seniors Amber Coleman and Tranice Harrell off with a victory for their last home game. Unfortunately, the Earlham College Quakers took the Yeowomen down in a tough 59-43 defeat.

The game had a tough beginning for the Yeowomen as the Quakers went on a 22-0 run, bringing the score to 24-2. By halftime, however, the Yeowomen had found their game and ran the score to 29-18. Early in the second half, Oberlin came within five points of Earlham after senior Amber Coleman managed a steal and scored two points. But Earlham surged forward, widening their lead once again to as much as 18 points before sealing the game.

Leading the Yeowomen were Coleman with 10 points, three steals and two assists while Harrell scored four points and snagged five rebounds and two assists. Another Yeowoman noteable for the game against Earlham was junior Nicole Burford with seven points, seven rebounds and three steals.

With the regular season over after the Earlham defeat, the Yeowomen set their sights on the NCAC tournament title in the opening round of the playoffs. Facing off against Wittenberg on Tuesday evening, morale was high as an upset looked like it may have been in the cards. However, the Yeowomen fell short of a victory against the Wittenberg Tigers 74-62, a respectable score given that the Tigers were 20-5 going into the game.

With Oberlin taking the first lead, the Tigers fought back tenaciously on an 11-0 run to gain an 11 point lead. By halftime however, that lead had been nearly cut in half as the Yeowomen were within striking distance at a six point defecit.

Despite strong attempts by the Yeowomen to stay in the game, the lead gradually widened asthe Tigers turned in outstanding performances to further the lead. Ultimately, the Yeowomen were shut down as two of the Tigers players scored career highs while the Yeowomen could only give noble efforts.

Once again senior Tranice Harrell turned in a great game, her final game, with 12 rebounds and five points while junior Cristina Briboneria and Nicole Burford also had exemplary performances.

The Yeowomen will lose two seniors to graduation but will look to turn in an even stronger team next year as recruiting efforts continue and three of the current players enter their senior year.
