Women’s team tops Wooster

The Yeowomen basketball has had a roller coaster Winter Term, with both big wins and heartbreaking losses. In the past week alone, the Yeowomen defeated the College of Wooster in a close 68-64 victory while dropping close games at home to Kenyon and Hiram.

The underdog win over Wooster on February 6th dropped the Wooster Fighting Scots to 4-8 in conference play while elevating the Yeowomen to 3-9 in the conference. Led by two first-years on the team, Oberlin quickly took control of the game and made it clear to the Scots that they would not go down without a fight.

First year Jessica Oram, a six foot tall center, scored a game-high 16 points, with 7-of-10 shooting from the field, while bringing down three boards in a mere fifteen minutes of playing time. Not to be the only first-year putting up impressive statistics, first-year Elizabeth Karan added 11 points to her name, had five assists, made four steals and pulled down four rebounds.

Juniors Christina Briboneria and Nicole Burford and Seniors Amber Coleman and Tranic Harrell also had excellent performances, leading the Yeowomen to the win while playing strong defense against Wooster, forcing them to shoot a meager 39 percent from the field.

Unfortunately, the Yeowomen did not put up a similarly outstanding performance against Kenyon at home last week as they dropped the game 65-47. The game was close until about halftime when the Kenyon lead grew to an explosive twenty points.

Despite valiant efforts to close the gap, including a run that bought ten points, Kenyon’s quick passing and ability to handle the full court press led them to victory.

Last Wednesday, the Yeowomen suffered a tough defeat at the hands of the Hiram Lady Terriers at home in a 63-62 loss. Leading by nine points at halftime, 38-29, the Yeowomen increased their lead to thirteen points only to have it tied up with four minutes remaining in the game, 60-60.

With two free throws, senior Amber Coleman put Oberlin up two points at the 1:40 mark, but the persistent efforts of the Lady Terriers closed the game with a three point run to evade the Yeowomen defense and sneak away with a 63-62 victory.

The Yeowomen will take on Denison University this Saturday at 2 p.m. in conference action. Denison is currently third in the conference while Oberlin is fighting to better its eighth place standing.
