Swimmers compete in dual meet against Case

The tranquil waters of Oberlin’s Carr Pool were transformed into a frenzied splash as the Yeomen hosted the Case Western Reserve University men and women’s swimming and diving teams. The women’s 400-yard medley relay got the dual meet under way and as the final swimmer from each team touched the wall, the Yeowomen found themselves six seconds behind. Unfortunately for Oberlin, the outcome of the meet followed suit.

Both the Yeomen and the Yeowomen were outraced by the Spartans and lost the dual meet 130-99 and 140-80, respectively. However, despite the loss, both Yeomen sides had standouts to boast about, especially considering their opponents were recently ranked eighth (women) and 10th (men) in the country (Division III).

“We swam extremely well. I was very proud of them. It shows how much we have improved from last year and how we can compete with opponents this year. I have high aspirations for the future,” said women’s head coach Mark Fino.

Three Yeomen were top finishers in their events. Junior Thomas Limouze took home three wins with marks of 10:50.53 in the 1000-yard freestyle, 5:09.04 in the 500-yard freestyle and 2:08.18 in the 200-yard butterfly. Senior Ben Pierce took first place in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.55 and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.17. Finally, first-year diver Daniel Timchak won both diving events, scoring 21 more points than the runner-up in the three-meter event.

The women had two standouts of their own. First-year Kiri Ulmschneider and sophomore Emily Spence led the way for the women by posting top times and breaking a school record. Ulmschneider swam the 200-yard butterfly in a record 2:15.75 and swam into the Oberlin top five by recording a 11:04.82 1000-yard freestyle. Spence followed suit and recorded a top five mark in the 50-yard freestyle at 25.75 and touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.98 to bring home a win for the Yeowomen.

“We are looking for season best times, lifetime best times and we will probably break a few more school records. As long as we stay focused we should do extremely well. I’m excited,” said Fino.

Both teams have one more meet before their January training trip in Fla. Last night both teams traveled to the College of Wooster.
