Witt outpaces swim teams

The first half of the swimming and diving season wound down last Saturday with hard-fought losses to Wittenberg University in a duel meet.

The Yeomen dropped their competition, 128-75, while the Yeowomen came up short, 133-85.

Individual winners for the women were first-year diver Anne Leinberger, senior Andreinne Zoller in the 200-yard breakstroke and first-year Kate Boyd.

Sophomore Thomas Limouze won the 1000 and 500 yard freestyle events, and first-year Marty Frazier won the 200-yard breaststroke for the men.

Other highlights included first-year Ashley Gam’s personal best in the 2000-yard butterfly (240.88) and fellow first-year Lisa Weigle’s first collegiate meet with a 5:13.26 in the 400-yard individual medley.

While one career began, senior Nikki Middaugh’s took one step closer to the end as she swam her final duel meet.

Middaugh will not be with the team much longer, as she plans to spend Winter Term in Antarctica.

After the Wittenberg meet, the team began a two-and-a-half week period of rest and tapering in anticipation of the Wooster Invitational. The multiple team invite will take place Dec. 4-6.

Tapering, which also occurs in cross country and track, consists of an easier workout routine before a meet. This allows the muscles to rest and, if done correctly, will prepare the athlete to perform at their highest level.

Many different swimmers are looking forward to the upcoming break.

“I’m excited about resting and shaving, I can’t wait to shave,” Limouze said.

Boyd, senior Lindsay Martin-McCormick and senior co-captain Meagan Dunphy-Daly are all excited to take a break from the rigorous training routine. The distance freestyle threesome, dubbed the “Tremendous Trio,” lead a group that also includes Zoller, Limouze and Gam.

Every weekday but Thursday, the group trains at 5:40 in the morning. They open with weightlifting and running and later complete a full swim practice. The demanding work ethic of these six swimmers is already beginning to show impressive results.

The “Tremendous Trio” anchors the distance freestyle events: 1000-yard freestyle (40 lengths of the pool), 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle. Boyd and Martin-McCormick are also integral components of the team’s number one 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Zoller has already won the 200-and 100-yard breaststroke events, as well as competed in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley relay team. Gam is building the foundation for a strong career, and will look to continue her success at the Wooster Invite after her first outing.

Limouze has started the season at an astounding pace. In just four duel meets since the start of the season he has already won the 200-yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle, the 1000-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard butterfly.
