Volleyball reaches double digit win total

The success and drastic improvement of the Oberlin College volleyball team continued over the past two weeks as the Yeowomen pulled off their first multiple-game win streak of the season.

Over a span of seven days during fall break, Oberlin played a total of five games. To begin play, Oberlin hosted a NCAC tri-match with games against Ohio Wesleyan University and Kenyon College. In the first match, Oberlin surprised the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University, prevailing 15-12 in the pivotal fifth game.

In their second matchup, Oberlin battled archrival Kenyon. Since there were three teams at the event, Oberlin had to sit and watch as Ohio Wesleyan and Kenyon played a match.

The long wait in between games proved to slow down the host Yeowomen as they dropped the match 30-21, 30-21, 30-20.

With the win and the loss on the afternoon, the Yeowomen ended the conference season with a 2-6 record, good for seventh place. Coupled with two loses by Earlham College, Oberlin’s victory over Ohio Wesleyan clinched the Yeowomen a spot in the conference championships for the first time since 2001.

For the remainder of fall beak, Oberlin traveled to Boston, Mass., for a five-day road trip.

In the first match, Oberlin upended host Endicott College in five games. To close out the trip, Oberlin completed their first three-match sweep of the season, defeating Babson College and Regis College, both three games to zero. After the completion of the road trip, Oberlin improved its overall record to 10-19.

To close out the regular season, Oberlin College hosted Bluffton College in a non-conference match. Oberlin came out sluggish in the first two games as they dropped them 30-17 and 30-14.

The third game saw Oberlin rally as they battled to a 30-24 win, but the night still ended badly for three seniors, Amber Coleman, Darci Leonhart and Adrienne Zoller, who played their final home game. Bluffton clinched its 17th victory of the season when they closed out Oberlin 30-25 in the fourth game.

To complete the season seventh-seeded Oberlin will travel to second-seeded Allegheny College on Saturday for the first round of the NCAC championships.

Regardless of this weekend’s finish, Oberlin won eight more games this season than last season, bearing witness to the fact that Oberlin College sports are heading toward the level of respectability that the new athletic director Vin Lananna has promoted.
