Fire kills two Oberlin children

A fire swept through a home on 106 S. Park Street on Sunday Oct. 19 killing two young children.

Deangelo and Dizirae Macarthy, ages four and one, were brought to Allen Medical Center by ambulance having suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns. Deangelo died of his injuries after being transported to Cleveland while his sister was flown to Cleveland Metro-Health Medical Center, where she died soon after her arrival.

The children were the first fire-related fatalities in Oberlin in over five years.

Their father, Derrick Macarthy and his two other children survived the fire. As of this printing, investigators have still not determined the cause of the fire.

“We don’t want to rush to any conlusions,” Fire Chief Dennis Kirin told the Oberlin News-Tribune. “That wouldn’t be right for the community.”

Approximately 150 people attended a memorial service which was held for the children last Tuesday at Westwood cemetary.

“Bear” wins class presidency

The Oberlin College class of 2007 has elected Evan “Bear” Kittay as its class president.

Kittay, who learned of the results on Tuesday, said that he chose to run because “the student body at Oberlin is changing and I feel that I am in touch with a large number of the students and can represent them.”

Kittay, a native of Scarsdale, New York said he has been disappointed so far by the administration’s unwillingness to meet with him.

“No one has contacted me since the election,” he said. “ I tried to get an appointment with Peter Goldsmith but he can’t meet with me till next week.”

“There’s a rift that exists between students and the administration that I would like to cement over,” he added.

Kittay also stated his opposition to the College’s plan to limit off campus housing, saying, “the College argues that students living in town hurts the community. I’ve done some research and I believe that this is not true.”

“We also need a lot more concerts,” he added.

Vanessa Flowers, the runner-up in the election, will serve as vice president.
